Now that you’re clear on the common mistakes to avoid, let’s talk about the steps to craft your OCR game plan so you can actually succeed on race day.
I know firsthand how frustrating it feels when you don’t have the right information. Just like you are probably experiencing, I used to struggle with trying to train and prepare for these types of extreme races.
There’s way too much information out there and it seems like everyone and their mom is offering advice about obstacle racing these days. Most of it is outdated, confusing or simply misinformed. And don’t even get me started on people who insist on dressing up for these types of races likes it’s a 5k fun run.
Training for these races took me about 7+ years. And trust me, you do not want to fail your way through years and years of obstacles, mud, burpees, hypothermia, hills, muscle cramps, and racing fees to figure this all out.
I was able to design a step-by-step process that walks people, just like you, through this entire process: from starting out all the way to confidently crossing the finish line of their first OCR.
And during this time, this system has helped countless clients finally finish an obstacle course race and use the lessons they’ve learned in their training to live into a better version of themselves; what I call the CHAMPION Life.
What I’ve found is that there are really only 3 main things you need to do before you set foot on an obstacle course. . .
#1) Get Clear On What’s Holding You Back
This is important because it doesn’t matter how much you want to do something, if you don’t organize your life and your daily actions to align with it, it won’t happen. This is all about prioritizing your time and planning out your training. Don’t be that person who is taking on everything all the time and running on fumes because you can’t say no. Slow down, figure out what’s most important, and make time for it.
#2) Define What You Want Out of OCR
This is important because this will determine how intense your training is and what you ultimately want to accomplish. Ensuring your goals and training are aligned is the best way to create a game plan for success. I can’t tell you how many people I meet on race day who have no idea what they want out of OCR or how it fits into their larger health and fitness journey as a whole. Knowing your “Why” makes those tougher moments in training and on the course worth it.
#3) Sign Up For the Right Race
This is important because too many new racers just follow along with what other friends say and they don’t do enough research ahead of time, opening up the floodgates for so many things to go wrong in the process. We all have the one friend who talks us into a crazy adventure. But signing up for the wrong Obstacle Course Race (OCR) can be a miserable experience. You want to be doing a race you’re knowledgeable about, excited about, and properly trained and prepared for so you can have an enjoyable time come race day.
Maybe you believe you’re capable of so much more and you just haven’t had the opportunity to prove it yet. Maybe you want to step into that next level version of you that you know is there, deep down within. Maybe you’re finally ready for a change.
Whatever the case, I assure you I’m nothing special. But I was able to go from falling all over the course to confidently conquering obstacles. And I’m telling you that if I can do it, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that you can as well. You, yes you, can finish an obstacle course race.
But if you’re not clear on where you’re heading, you’ll never get anywhere!
So why not have me walk you through my step-by-step process so you can get this off your plate in less than a week?
